EVERYONE who uses a computer needs one of these!
By rob
I bought this arm for two reasons. The first being that I am visually impaired and having the monitor close and at proper height is essential to me being able to use my computer. Secondly because I was buying a kneeling chair to help my sitting posture and related lower back pains. I am tall so I bend over to do everything it seems and at 32, my back is suffering from it. I work on a computer all day and my neck strain from looking down at my monitor was getting so bad I started getting tingling sensations in my right shoulder and couldn't get comfortable at night unless on my back which I can never fall asleep on. This product I can honestly say, has been one of THE BEST things I have ever purchased. I didn't want to spend the money on one honestly, and have used books stacked underneath for years. They only bring it higher, not closer, and are always in the way. This unit mounts to the rear edge of your desk freeing up the room under and around your monitor so you can put you keyboard UNDERNEATH and sit in a comfortable position and look straight ahead, relieving all neck strain. My job bought me one at my request, and I loved it so much I didn't want to get on my computer at home anymore. I got over the price and bought one for home immediately. I promise you will NOT REGRET purchasing this arm. The build quality is awesome, assembly is a piece of cake, comes with the tools you need (really just adjusting one set screw for pole height). And I would recommend to anyone, especially tall people, get the unit (this one) with the tall pole if you can. You can always lower it if you need to but if you buy the short pole you can never go beyond the top. You can however spend considerably more an buy another pole once you find that out, or have to return the short one for the tall pole model. Hope this helps some people :)

Great arm! ...but hits the wall.
By Sunny Days
Overall, I really like this product and recommend it. However, I only gave it 4 stars because there was no out-of-the-box solution provided to keep the arms from hitting the wall (see Cons below). I was also unable to find an add-on solution offered by Ergotron (if someone knows of one, please leave a comment with the details).
Pros:
- Looks good.
- Stays where you set it.
- Good price for the quality.
- Tension adjustments for all articulations (except 360 screen rotation and pan).
- Easy to assemble (helpful step-by-step assembly video is available on the Ergotron website).
Cons:
Note - If you don't have an issue with the arm protruding beyond the back of the desk, neither item listed below should be an issue for you (so it's safe to disregard both).
- No 180 degree rotation stop option - If your desk backs to a wall that you don't want marked/dented by the arm repeatedly hitting it when you put the monitor in its fully retracted position (or if you just don't want the arm protruding beyond the back of your desk for whatever reason), this product falls short. For my application, the arm would be greatly improved if Ergotron had engineered a solution for this common issue. After giving it some thought, I was able to come up with a very simple way to keep the arm from damaging my wall by placing 3/4" adhesive vinyl bumpers on the ends of the upper and lower arms (see pics). Now the soft bumper contacts the wall rather than the metal arm. I also added another bumper to the upper arm where it comes into contact with the "Tall Pole" when the monitor is put in a low position and then retracted (see pics).
- No pan tension adjustment - It appears this product intends the pan motion to be accomplished primarily via the tension-adjustable joints in lower arm rather than the non-adjustable pan joint nearest the monitor. There's no issue when the arm is mostly extended because the lower arm does not contact the wall while panning. However, when the arm is retracted, the (very stiff) pan joint nearest the monitor will not move before the joint in the lower arm does. So when panning in the retracted position, the lower arm uses the wall as a leverage point. In the absence of a mechanical rotation stop, it would be nice to be able to adjust the tension in the upper pan joint so that it would move there more easily (instead of all the movement taking place in the lower arm).
Also, if it hasn't already occurred to you, it's probably a good idea to take some measurements to be sure your current monitor cable will be long enough. Because of the extra length this arm adds when extended, you may want to consider buying a longer monitor cable at the same time you buy the arm. Standard monitor cables are about 5-6' and unless your monitor is very close to your machine, a standard cable might be too short.
If I haven't added an update to the top of this review, this product is still working out great for me.

Excellent and very good price
By Jon Konrath
I've been trying to find a decent monitor arm that would raise my VESA-mount monitor to a height more than a few inches from my desktop, so I wasn't constantly looking down and messing up my neck. Most desk-mounted monitor arms though can only lift a monitor at most a foot from the desk surface, and many of them leave you guessing in their minimal product descriptions.
The Ergotron web site offers very comprehensive documentation describing the exact dimensions of this product, which was very helpful in deciding on it. I'm using the arm to hold a 24" monitor about 22" from my desk surface to the center of the monitor mount, with no problems whatsoever. There are cheaper monitor stands, and I used one for a while, but this offers a pretty robust arm that absorbs vibration from typing well, and firmly keeps the monitor in position. It also allows me to easily raise, lower, spin, and move forward and backward the monitor, holding it in any possible position. The clamp system used to hold it to the desk is also very substantial, and works well. (You could also drill your desk and mount it that way.) Overall, a great product, and worth the extra money from the cheap-o solutions out there.
