JVC KWAV61BT
By Dustin Hoffman
Great head unit for the price. I researched for 2 months to try and find the right head unit, and came across the JVC KWAV61bt. Can’t beat the price or the ease of use. Screen looks great and the sound quality is great. I don’t have an iphone (I’m against apple) but the head unit connects really well via Bluetooth with my Samsung galaxy s3. I also have poweramp installed on my phone and the head unit allows me to change songs without having to touch my phone. Highly recommended. Will be attaching the SiriusXM receiver and the backup camera this week.

Really good value, does almost everything I expect
By M. O'Dell
For reference, this is installed in 2002 Ford F250 SuperDuty pickup truck. I currently have an iphone 4 that I use with this unit and have the unit connected (video out) to an overhead DVD player, use the iphone audio/video cable (apple version, not JVC) to the audio input, as well as a backup camera to the dedicated camera video input.

Solid unit overall. Amazing feature set for the money, if you think about it. I feel like my truck has been made new again. I like the touch screen and the configurable color backlight matching for the buttons, etc. I picked this one because it had blue-tooth with separate microphone, DVD, touchscreen, ipod/iphone streaming, support for reverse camera and a separate volume nob. Unlike some, I have no issues with seeing the screen in daylight when I turn my lights on (it doesn't automatically dim the screen too much). Pairing with the iphone was easy, and it always seems to connect, although it may sometimes take a minute to do so.

Installation was fairly straightforward. Used a Metra dash and wiring harness kits for my truck, also ordered from amazon. It looks completely integrated with the dash - as if it came with the truck. It did take some custom trimming to install it. I did find the metra cable did not correctly identify the dimmer light for my vehicle, and I had to redo that to get the automatic dimmer to work (used the plain orange wire instead of the orange w/stripe). I simply grounded the parking brake sensor cable and the video plays back while car is moving (that was actually far easier than hooking it up to the parking brake).

The bluetooth audio streaming works quite well. It has more power than the stock unit (I'm using stock speakers), which is good because my really noisy truck can use the extra speaker volume at times.

The remote backup camera works seamlessly, and it uses the whole screen which is nice. It does take a couple seconds for the unit to boot up, but usually I haven't started backing up until then anyway. The color of the image seems a bit washed out, but I think that the fault of the camera.

Things I wish were a bit better (why it gets 4 and not 5 stars): People that I'm talking to via phone tell me the phone audio is a bit echoey, but they do say they can't tell I'm in an extremely clackety diesel truck, more like in a conference room on a speaker phone. I've tried all different mic locations and played with the echo cancellation settings, but nothing seems to improve it. Oddly, when I'm parked and the truck is not even running (just using acc switch position), for some reason people say they sometimes hear some loud background noise and have a hard time hearing me - I start the extremely noisy truck and it goes away. They always sound very good to me over the speakers. I'm *really* disappointed to find that when I connect Iphone video (using the Apple AV video cable, not USB), it only plays through the front screen, and doesn't go through the "video out" to my remote DVD display. That is something I was really counting on. I would have expected that a "video receiver" would take an input and allow you to route it through to an output, but there is no way to do that - the "video out" only works with the embedded DVD player. This means I can't stream netflix from my iPhone to my backseat passengers, for example. This makes the investment in the iphone video cable pretty limited for me and I'm thinking of just going back to a USB cable as you can still stream pandora, etc. The iphone video cable doesn't work with an iphone 5 anyway so I'll pull it out at some point no matter what.

Tremendous value, great performance
By David Garth
I could not be happier with this unit. It performs beautifully, and is incredibly versatile.

I have installed it in a Class C motorhome. The wiring installation was easy, but mechanically fitting it into the dash took some effort. It's not the radio's fault; it's because my the RV manufacturer had transformed the Chevy double-DIN into a non-standard 1 3/4 DIN hole.

Pros (there are so many I don't know where to start:

* The touch screen is bright and the touch very responsive
* The sound quality and power are impressive (upgrade your speakers if you can and you'll be blown away.) The sound with my new JL audio speakers is luscious, with clean, deep bass and sparking highs.
* Practically any music source can be imported; every conceivable kind of input and output.
* The FM radio tuner is far superior (better sensitivity and selectivity) than the tuner in my upgraded radio/audio JBL system in my Prius.
* It works very well with an iPhone 5 for making and receiving phone calls and playing music (both with Bluetooth and through USB) , including album art and song choice etc. over Bluetooth and USB (no need for a special cable. I don't think it will play video or mirror the phone screen or apps with an iPhone 5, 5c, or 5s yet) Pandora works great.
* Incredibly customizable
* Logical, attractive and easy to use interface. I was able to do practically everything without reading the manual. That's a huge deal. So far only the up-down arrow for random play didn't make sense. I was deciding between this and the similar Kenwoord. (They both owned by Kenwood now.) But the Kenwood interface didn't look as good to me.
* Very clean, modern look when installed.
* Physical volume button.
* Front AV input.
* The unit has excellent build quality. It looks like it's designed to be rugged and trouble free.
* Detachable front screen.

Cons:

* I wish it played more mobile video formats. (maybe in a future firmware update?)
* The screen is oriented such that it can be dark when viewed with Polarized sunglasses. If I tilt my head 45 degrees to the left, the screen is bright.

All in all, for me at least, this is the best value I've ever experience in car audio. A great unit!
