Good Instructions, Good Range, Good Value
By Patrick S McMichael
So I read a bunch of the reviews here and on other sites and hesitantly bought this for installation on my '03 Toyota 4Runner as a gift for my wife, so she wouldn't have to run out to start the car in the freezing cold this winter.

I took the advice of numerous other reviewers, and it was well worth it. Yes, you should do your homework. You can get all the resources you need (instructions and wiring "cheat sheet" for your specific vehicle) directly from the bulldog security website -- without even purchasing the unit. Read the instructions carefully (they're a bit obtuse but you can probably get a grip on them after a couple of reads) and make sure you are up for the task. It's not particularly easy, but it's not particularly difficult either. And I've never done any real electrical work to speak of. It's nice they even have careful instructions on how to perform a "correct" splice. In addition the kit comes with the primary tools you'll need - a voltage checker that's dead easy to use, a utility knife that is great for splicing, pre-spliced wires with tab plugs, wire ties, etc.

A few gotchas that got me that might help you on your way:
- Even though the wireless transponder unit is connected, it's inexplicably not powered by the unit itself. That means you have to make a third power splice for the wireless transponder unit that is only loosely alluded to in the instructions. I took it off the constant 12V supply in my vehicle and that seems to work well.
- If the unit does nothing when you apply power, it's probably dead-on-arrival (DOA). My first one was. Don't bother calling bulldog security. The tech line is only available while you're at work, it invariably has a long wait, and the best they can do for you is tell you to send it back to amazon for a refund (this after you've installed the whole thing and would have to unsplice it all [ugh!]). Maybe you could get them to send you a replacement? I don't know. I just bought a second unit and returned the DOA unit with the rest of the install kit for the second unit, if that makes sense.
- If you're having problems with the remote, here's a little trick the tech guy told me about. Touch the blue wire to any ground and the unit should cause a start to happen. This was really useful for me to determine that the second unit they sent me was not actually keyed to respond to the remote they sent me.

Now that it is all setup, it works perfectly. It's been in for a few weeks now and has good range, which is about all that really matters to me, I guess. It was a fun project for me and my wife loves it. The whole thing took me about 8 hours to do and I'd say about 2-3 hours of prep time.

All in all it's a good deal for those that want to DIY, I ended up saving around $170 versus the local installers I called. Of course, that doesn't factor in the cost of the loss of a wireless transponder key, which for some cars can be pretty expensive.

Hope this helps!

Good Value, There Might Be Better Options.
By Kevin W
I purchased this remote start to install as a surprise for my in-laws for Christmas. The install involved somewhere around 8 wire splices in to the vehicle. The instructions say to wrap the wires around each other in an odd way. I used a soldering iron and mastic based electrical insulator, which I think gives a more permanent connection.

For the install in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee I had to remove the dash trim pieces below the steering wheel to install the security key loop, tie in to the ignition harness and tie in to the parking light wire. I also had to remove the driver door trim to tap in to the security and door lock wires. I installed the system to use the factory key fob, so they wouldn't have to have two fobs (one for locks and one for remote start). This system allows you to press the lock button on the factory fob three times to trigger the remote start. I also found that if you don't program the unit to tell it that you have a keyless entry, but you do hook up the wires, it will try to start any time the doors lock (even while driving). In all the installation took a little over 2 hours with ample tools and automotive knowledge.

I thought this kit was a great deal at about $50. Once I read the vehicle specific instructions, I found that I needed three of the 775 relays: A2C 775 Universal Automotive Relay. I recommend checking bulldogsecurity.com to see what is required for your vehicle before ordering.

Knowing what I do now, I would probably look for a unit that ties in to the OBD (on board diagnostic) port to eliminate a lot of the wiring and relays.

Wish I could give no stars - DO NOT BUY!
By H. Brooks
This remote starter was a complete waste of time and energy. I purchased for my husbands car, and my dad who has been a Mazda master tech for 30+ years spent an entire Saturday trying to get it to work. Parts were missing to complete installation and the parts that were included were found defective. After attempting to call the service department for Bulldog 15 times (no answer and kept getting redirected) he finally gave up. Left several messages to call him back with no such luck. Customer service is just as bad as the product, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY! Price may be tempting, but please be warned!
