Cobra CX-101A
By Rick
These units are cheap at $20.00 bucks and work great. I tested them in a rural area in Florida and got 1/2 mile Max performance which is fine for my purposes.
The AAA batteries have lasted for several hours and haven't needed replacement yet, even with the constant yapping back and forth of my little grand sons. Good battery life is a real Plus and is the exception to the rule with the typical battery-eating GMRS/FRS radios.
Your range will improve of course if you're operating on a lake or from mountain top to mountain top. Otherwise a 1/2 mile is plenty and the battery life is great!
I bought an extra pair because they'll probably go up in price like everything does, or they may also quit making this practical and efficient model at some point.
