Ford Mustang Replacement Stereo.
By R. Anderson
My harness from Metra worked perfectly on my 2005 Mustang. I installed a Kenwood Stereo in place of the Shaker 500. It was a big improvement and gives me the ability to plug in my IPOD and/or Phone with the front Aux input and USB. The only thing I'd like to see is better instructions. Most of the wires are color coded the same between the Metra harness and the Kenwood plug. So matching and connecting was easy. However, the Ford Shaker system has two plugs. One is the basic harness and the other is for the front door subs/amplifiers. I didn't know this when I started. I was confused about how to wire in the second plug. I discovered that you need to connect the various blue/white wires together (the two blue/white wires on the small connector to the blue/white on the large connector to the blue/white out of the radio). This set-up turns on the amps. If you have a separate sub/amp in your trunk, you would need to wire in a fifth blue/whire to turn on that amp. I didn't see any instructions for doing this. Also, I read somewhere that the voltage coming out of the radio is 12 volts and the Ford amps only require 5 volts. If they see a 12 volt signal, they will "pop". As such, I wired in a 12 volt to 5 volt voltage reducer from Radio Shack (less than $2). I don't know if I needed this but it was cheap and simple to wire in and I have no turn-on pop. Again, if this was needed, I would have appreciated some instruction as to whether to go this extra step. Otherwise, this was a simple install thanks to the Metra Harness.

Missing the steering wheel control wire
By D. ONeill
This wiring harness made upgrading the head unit in my '04 Crown Vic easy-- almost. It's missing the steering wheel control wire-- incredible because Metra's own Axxess ASWC steering wheel control box specifies this wire!

Metra specifies this harness for my car on their website-- which is why I bought it. My work around was to pop one of the two unused wires for my application out, and pop it into hole 18 on the connector. I needed to remove the red plastic locking plate from the connector before removing and re-inserting the wire.

Perfect for 05-09 Mustangs with Shaker 500
By Gearhead Mania
Metra 70-5521

Crutchfield claims this kit does not exist or work on my 07 Mustang with the Shaker 500, and insisted I purchase an expensive PAC kit that requires soldering a diode.

With the 70-5521, there are 2 harnesses. The large one is for the main radio harness, the smaller one is for the Shaker 500 subwoofers. You will need a LM7805 or equivalent voltage regulator to convert a 10-15 V signal into a 5V signal.

The LM7805CT voltage regulator was needed because the Ford factory Shaker 500 amplifiers require a 5V turn-on signal, while aftermarket receivers use 12V turn-on signals for the amps. This results in a pop or overload of the amp turn-on. The LM7805CT seems to do the trick, and I was told by other Mustang owners not to worry about heatsinks or cooling the regulator because the current/power dissipation isn't that great.

I also observed that it was definitely possible to tap into the light/illumination leads for either the message center harness or the HVAC harness to enable the dimming feature on the CX501, but I opted not to touch the factory wiring. The main factory harness does NOT have a power antenna (solid blue), amp turn-on (blue/white) or phone mute (brown) so those must be sealed/wrapped off on the big Metra harness. The smaller Metra harness that goes to the Shaker 500 will have a pair of amp turn-on leads (blue/white) that attach to the OUTPUT side of the LM7805. The INPUT side of the LM7805 goes to the amp turn-on lead coming from the receiver harness. The RCA inputs for the Shaker 500 subs go to the appropriate RCA jacks on the back of the receiver. I soldered all of the ground leads together which goes back to the receiver harness ground lead.

I used solder and heatshrink wrapping and can confirm that this wiring kit will work on a 05-09 Mustang (or at least the 2007).

Overall: 5/5 stars, very inexpensive, not hard to use, just remember to buy a 5V regulator from Radio Shack - I opted to buy my Fairchild LM7805CT from Digi Key so that I knew I was getting a quality regulator.
